Rockford Daybook: RVC donation, Stolen car game, RPS new school opens

Sarah Shumway won a drawing earlier this summer, but it's Rock Valley College that got lucky.

The drawing took place during the Boone County Community Foundation's appreciation picnic earlier this summer where non-profits and service organizations in Boone County were honored.

As the winner of the drawing, Shumway was able to donate $500 to the nonprofit of her choice and chose the Rock Valley College Foundation. The money will go towards scholarships for the Advanced Technology Center in Belvidere.

The ATC was also a recipient of the Boone County Community Foundation's 2022 grant cycle, where they received a grant to help fund a welding simulator.

The Boone County Community Foundation will present the check to the Rock Valley College Foundation at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Rock Valley College Advanced Technology Center, 1400 Big Thunder Blvd., in Belvidere.

It truly is bad enough that some Kia and Hyundai models are so easy to steal that teenagers can watch how-to videos online and figure out how to do it with a screwdriver and a USB cord.

It doesn't need to get worse, but, of course, it does.

Turn out, local police say the actual theft is nothing more than a game for some juveniles. They don't need a car or a ride. They're not stealing parts off the car to sell. No, they're stealing cars as part of game.

In case you missed this report from Jeff Kolkey, here's our story about stolen cars and the dangerous game teenagers are playing in Rockford and across the nation.

Rockford Public Schools IB Candidate School at Conklin will host a back-to school kick-off event with staff and families from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Conklin, 3003 Halsted Road, in Rockford.

IB at Conklin is a new special programs school opening this fall for the first time for students K-5. International Baccalaureate is an internationally recognized program. The students’ day is integrated across subject areas versus a traditional school day where each subject has a dedicated time during the day.

The first day of school is Thursday.
